DUTIES:
The incumbent at this level has full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of non supervisory personnel, including GS-09 and GS-11 MT's, and at least 1 subordinate team leader or supervisor at the next lower grade level. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Recommends appointments, plans and assigns work, gives advice and c! ounsel and evaluates work of subordinates;
Responsible for mon! itoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance;
Assures corrective action is initiated if needed;
Assures orientation, training and competency assessment of assigned staff;
Develops and updates technical policy and procedure manuals;
Ensures all staff and affiliate staff are in compliance with accrediting and regulating bodies;
Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resources allocation decisions made at the executive level.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

- Must be proficient in spoken and written English
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science ! or in a related science and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Both the education and clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of a study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree.
- Must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-12:
Requires completion of the equiva! lent of 1 year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level, ! which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled. Examples of creditable experience include but are not limited to recommending appointments, planning and assigning work, giving advice and counsel and evaluating the work of subordinates; responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance; assuring corrective action is initiated; assuring orientation, training and competency assessment of assigned staff; developing and updating technical policy and procedure manuals; ensuring all staff and affiliate staff are in compliance with accrediting and regulating bodies; and adjusts staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resources allocation decisions made at the executive level.

Physical Demands:
The work requires long periods of regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing to operate instruments, bending over microscopes, reaching and bending to obtain supplies and operate instruments, and travel by walking to other sections of the laboratory and/or medical center. May be required to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. The work requires above average manual dexterity. Color vision is required in general and excellent eyesight is important for microscopic examinations.
Work Environment:
The work is performed in the laboratory. There is periodic, potential exposure to moderate risks in clinical laboratories. These risks include infectious material, carcinogenic materials, caustic agents, noxious fumes, and flammables. The Supervisory Medical Technologist is required to follow the establ! ished laboratory safety and universal precaution policies and guideline! s.
