Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Position Details Position Summary: Responsible for the integrity of the fiber system and telecommunications infrastructure from transmitter to subscriber point of service connection according to the Federal and company specifications including designing, servicing, repairing and maintaining the Cox Communications Optical Fiber Network.

Primary Responsibilities/Tasks - Essential Functions Proficient in the maintaining and construction of fiber optics system for optics/laser transmitter to optical receivers (indoor and outdoor) using 1310um/1550um technology. Ensures timely completion of fiber optic construction project within all Cox Communications, FCC, state and local codes by monitoring and regular inspections of all activation activities with contractors and in-house personnel. Provides input on all newly planned Upgrade, XO, Commercial and Residential fiber projects by recommending most economical tie route(s). Ensures the integrity of the fiber system by using approved industry test procedures for path losses and continuity and documenting results as required. Ability to train others in the use of these test procedures. Acts as technical liaison for contractors by providing technical advice and support as needed. Ensures the completion of high levels of accuracy on all fiber assignments by performing pre-checks to verify traffic and accurate labeling to maintain fiber birth assignments with 100% accuracy. Ability to discriminate fiber usage during responses to system outages to provide speedy repairs to the fibers of most importance utilizing appropriate methods and equipment. Provides technical support for the Maintenance and MTC departments as needed. Demonstrates accurate record keeping, fusion and mechanical splicing techniques and proficiency at Fiber Optic testing. Ensures appropriate evaluation of new projects to obtain labor, material costs to submit for funding by completing engineering evaluations as required using approved company policies and procedures. Accurately completes all departmental logs, reports and paperwork on a daily basis. Effectively organizes workday to maximize productivity and to ensure splicing performance requirements are maintained by utilizing proper time management techniques. Ensures safety equipment and procedures are performed and used according to Cox Communications safety standards. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with subscribers, the general public, co-workers, contractors, and other outside contacts. Ensures tools are kept in a secure manner and safe vehicle performance by inspecting vehicle and equipment and performing minor, incidental preventative maintenance tasks (i.e. check oil, wipers, lights, tires, brakes) on a daily basis and reporting needed repairs to immediate supervisor using appropriate reporting procedures. Ability to work overtime as required and to work in any other Cox Communications - Las Vegas location as needed. Assists in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities HS diploma, GED or relevant work experience Specialized skill training/certification may be required 2-5 years of experience in area of responsibility required

Additional System Requirements Fusion fiber splicing certification Minimum of 2 years experience splicing Fiber Fusion splicing experience with 2 years Field, Construction, or Maintenance experience. Minimum three years CATV fiber and/or RF experience. Proficient communication skills Ability to edit written materials, and evaluate technical data. Ability to accurately read maps, blueprints, and splice assignments. Proficient in resolving fiber related technical problems using accepted industry practices and procedures. Ability to apply reasoning to solve practical problems with a variety of variables that have limited standardization. Skilled in the use of field-test equipment. Ability to train others in optical technology (voice, video, data, etc.). Proficient experience as a Fiber Splicer I, meeting standards for a minimum of 3 years with Cox Communications.

Recommended Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Associates Degree in Electronics Through knowledge of NESC, OSHA and NEC standards Ability to apply reasoning to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems which may include nonverbal symbolism and abstruse concepts.

Environment/Working Conditions:
Works in external environment with exposure to electricity, height, dangerous tools, confined spaces and traffic.

Physical Qualifications:
Ability to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently.

Ability to:
Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Ability to work in vaults, manholes, aerial extensions machines, poles, trenches, and tight spaces. Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. Raising objects from lower to higher position or moving objects horizontally form position to position. Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Ability to receive detailed information through verbal communication. Ability to function and endure all weather conditions and extreme climate changes.

Visual Requirements:
Clarity of vision to include near vision (20 inches or less) and mid-range vision (more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet). Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and they actually are. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
