Provides litigation support and management of open claims. Analyzes closed claims for quality improvement.
Duties include! management of the UMC self-insurance fund; development of pro! cedures for investigating and tracking actual or potential losses; works with outside defense counsel to plan, direct and perform the discovery phase of litigation cases; coordinates research on medical - legal issues; conducts loss control surveys in hospital and outpatient departments to identify and reduce risk exposures; compiles, analyzes, and reports on loss exposures, potentially compensable patient events, and claims/lawsuits to identify and track losses and trends; Serves on a wide variety of UMC and Clark County committees as a risk consultant. Advises all levels of management, physicians, and staff on matters pertaining to risk management. Job Requirement: Education/Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare/Hospital Administration, Risk Management, Law, or closely-related field. Four (4) years of progressive risk management experience in a large hospital or healthcare system, two (2) years of which were in a management role.
! Experience must include negotiation of malpractice settlements. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Valid Class C Nevada Driverâs License Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements: PREFER: Prior experience with compliance policies within the healthcare industry. Have a thorough understanding of HIPAA regulations. Prior experience conducting Risk Assessments.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements: Knowledge of: Relevant state, federal and local safety, compliance, privacy, and risk management laws, regulations and standards; current risk management practices in a hospital environment (including risk identification and control, risk analysis, risk financing); application of loss control principles to individual cases or problems; claims management principles and practices; financial planning and fund management principles; record retention /destructions; product recall procedures; safe medical device tracking; business law princip! les; insurance principles and practices; computer applications, particu! larly as related to the performance of medico-legal research; correct business English; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; informed consent; legal guardianship; end of life decisions: durable power of attorney; sentinel event identification; root cause analysis; failure mode effect analysis; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures. Skill in: Mediating problem resolution, team building, and project leadership; developing and interpreting regulations, policies and procedures; applying fund management techniques; presenting understanding and interpreting statutes, administrative regulations and TJC standards; researching, interpreting, applying, and explaining applicable laws, codes, and regulations; coordinating subordinates, physicians, peers and community organizations; performing quantitative and qualitative ! analysis; organizing and implementing tracking systems; planning and writing procedures manuals; using computers and related software applications; communicating effectively with people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or an eligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
